At least, 18 persons were reportedly killed on Sunday morning when armed men with dangerous weapons, including guns,invaded a mosque at Maza-Kuka village in Mashegu Local Government Area of Niger state and left several others injured.
Our Correspondent gathered that the armed men, in their numbers, on storming Maza-Kuka, went straight to the mosque as the victims were performing morning prayers (Subhi) and attacked them with their dangerous weapons tincluding knives and other sharp objects.
Sources from the area told The Reporters that the attackers shot sporadically into the air to scare away possible intruders before taking on their victims at closed range inside mosque, while others scampered with several degrees of injuries.
The armed men were said to have besieged the area in convoy of several numbers of motorcycles to carry out their henious crime against humanity.
“They took us unawares, still confused and shocked over the attackā,an indigene of the area who pleaded anonymity told journalists.
The source added that while the attack was going on,some villagers in the ensuing confusion ran into the bushes, adding that many might have died in the pandominium.
āSo far we counted about 17 to 18 corpsesā, adding that the local government Chairman and his team were already on assessment tour of the community to sympathize with the families of those that lost their loved ones and the injured.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Niger state Command, DSP Wasiu A. Abiodun could not confirm the attacks as his number could not be reached as at the time of filing the report.
