Poly student lands in prison for 8 years for illegal possession of fire arms

For possessing fire arms illegally and belonging to an unlawful association,a Magistrate Court in Lokoja, Kogi State has sentenced Shehu Tenimu Mohammed, an ND II student of the Department of Public Administration, Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja to eight years in prisonment and N8,000 fine.

The trial judge, the Magistrate Tenimu Mohammed, handed down the sentence while delivering judgement in the case.

He convicted Mohammed on the three-count charge, who pleaded guilty to the offenses in the charge sheet, also fined him the N8,000.

Barr. Samuel Ikutanwa, the prosecuting counsel at the hearing, had demanded for the charges to be read to the hearing of the accused person, who pleaded guilty to committing the offenses of unlawful association, possession of firearm and a member of a cult group.

The online publication recalls that the security operatives of Kogi State Polytechnic had arrested Mohammed for being in possession of a locally fabricated revolver pistol.

The convict, was also sentenced for being in illegal possession of pistol and caught carrying five rounds of live ammunition while making his way through the main entrance of the Polytechnic on April 9, 2021.

Mohammed’s was made possible by the strong security network put in place to halt attempt to breach the ban on End-of- Examination Celebration by the management of the institution.

The ban came into force, the online news platform gathered,following intelligence report that some suspected cultists planned to invade the campus with ammunition to avenge their colleague who was killed after the end of examination in 2019.

Being proactive, the anagement of the polytechnic,led by the Rector, Dr S.O. Usman, therefore beefed up security on the campus, including daily routine check at the Polytechnic entrance and the premises which led to the arrest of the culprit.
