Residents of Gadumo/Ganaja quarters, located along Ganaja Lokoja-Ganaja, road under reconstruction in Kogi state, have sent passionate appeal to the Kogi and Federal Governments to prevail on the construction company handling 17-kilometre road to commence the wetting of the road.
This they said became necessary to save them from continued consumption of quantum dust, emanating from the reconstruction of the road, a development they said posed danger to their health.
Many of the residents who spoke with the Correspondent of The Reporters on Saturday in the area, described the ubiquitous dust enveloping the area as unnecessary, harden been that the company wet the road in the course of work.
” We have been consuming serious dust since the reconstruction of this road, starting from November last year and we have been calling on the necessary authorities to bail us out without concrete response.
“The kind of dust we receive from the road now bear resemblance to product meant for the production of cement or ceramic materials. This is even more dangerous to our health, compared to the brown dust initially.
” No doubt, prolong inhaling of this kind of dust will have long term health implementation to the residents of this area.
“Therefore, we are passionately appealing to the Commissioner for Works and Housing in the state and the federal authorities to compel the company to speed up completion of work, coupled with applying water in the reconstruction, to check the dust flying all over our faces and penetrating our rooms,” one of the residents, Abdulmalik Mohammed, said.
Investigation by The Reporters showed that many commercial motorcyclists and operators of tricycle, popularly called “kekenapep” have stopped plying the road, citing heavy dust which they said usually impede their sight while driving and predisposed them to accident.
This development, the online application further gathered, has resul6t in high volume of commutters stranded at the strategic locations in Lokoja, waiting to board such motorcycle or kekenapep to Gadumo/Ganaja, especially at rush hours in the morning and evening.
