Senator Mohammed Sani Musa, representing Niger-East Senatorial district of Niger state, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for scrapping Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) youths for standing against all forms of atrocities by the defunct SARS.
Musa who also lauded the President for heeding the clarion call for an end to SARS, however, called total overhauling of the entire security structure and make it more responsive to the present needs of Nigerians.
The,Senator, in a statement made available to journalists in Minna, noted with dismay that the SARS operatives had been in the forefront of abusing and brutalizing Nigerians they were paid to protect, hence the need for their disbandment.
“The SARS has been the topic of many discussions, particularly with regards to high level of human rights violations and police brutality against harmless Nigerians. Recently, we witnessed as Americans trouped out en masse to demand their police reform, many of us shared the hashtags and the frustrations”.
Senator Musa said there was urgent need to end duplications among security architecture in Nigeria, in line with present day realities.
He said that similar to what happened in America, is beginning to take place in and Nigeria, adding that as such,youths decided to stand up and say, ‘enough is enough’.
“The evidence against SARS is not short of damning. Reports from Amnesty International to videos and witness statements that indicate not just flagrant abuse of power, but also a societal menace that affects every segment of the Nigerian society”.
Senator Musa, who is the Senate Committee Chairman on Senate Services, further observed that, “Despite multiple previous attempts to reform SARS, there is overwhelming evidence to suggest that the unit remains a danger to the people it was created to protect”.
“The first step is acknowledging Nigerians for embarking on this cause, and I anticipate an end that will reflect the government’s commitment toward protecting and securing citizens. History will remember those that answered the call of the masses”.
“I applaud our youths for their resilience leading the movement as well as exercising their democratic rights to peaceful protest. This is how nations are built for the interest of the masses.
