Beyond Edo Election by Chukudi Ekezie

After the election in Edo, Nigerians are behaving as if all their problems have been solved. Few give thought to the fact that the characters are the same who continue to insult their sensibilities.

What should bother us is what development those at the helm should bring in the areas of health, education, security, housing and all.

APC and PDP are two sides of a coin which has produced a bunch of political merchants and brigands.

In 21 years of milidocracy, led by students of military politics, Nigeria has achieved less than the four years of civilian rule between 1979 and 1983 led by those who understood the meaning of leadership.

It was at that time that politicians with some sense of good breeding peer reviewed each other to serve the citizens.

Tell me which era executed a national housing programme than the Shehu Shagari administration of the Second Republic.

Since public servants started contributing money to the National Housing Fund in 1993, how many get houses? The scheme is the biggest fraud in Nigeria’s public service. Instead of maintaining what he inherited, Olusegun Obasanjo sold off public assets without adding one new block.

When Jim Nwobodo established the first state-owned university, in 1980, Anambra State University of Science and Technology, his peers in Imo, Ogun State, Bendel State and Lagos State, emulated him in a thoughtful manner and set up similar institutions many of which have given rise to new uncertainties.

Today, state governors try to outdo one another in thieving state resources, an attitude they acquired from their military mentors.

Please tell me in which sector these merchants of power have helped us in 21 years.
