Ilorin
Three persons who violated the lockdown order made by the Kwara State government to curb the spread of coronavirus pandemic in the state have been sentenced to a 30-day community service.
An Ilorin Chief Magistrate Court sentenced them to the punishment having found them guilty of breaching the government order.
The convicts are: Amos Philip, Babangida Dontatin and Baraye Abel, all of Sawmill Area, Ilorin.
The convicts had pleaded guilty to the offences and pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy and they promised not to do such again.
Prior to the conviction of their, the prosecutor, Inspector Nasir yusuf, had prayed the court to try them summarily since they pleaded guilty to the offence.
The Chief Magistrate, Bio Salisu, convicted the defendants for failure to comply with restriction order imposed by the government, obstruction of a public servant carrying out his duties under government restriction order and disobedient to order duly promulgated by public servant.
The court ordered them to sweep the High Court premises, Ilorin for the next 30 days, beginning from April 16.
Duaglobalnews recalls that the convicts were arrested on Tuesday by a team of Police Operatives, ‘B’ Division, Ilorin engaged in enforcing the restriction order to control the spread of COVID-19 in the state.
The team had accosted and arrested the convicts who were timber machine operators at Sawmill Area, Ilorin engaging in commercial activities in disobedience to the Executive order restricting movement of people within the state.
The Police First Information Report (FIR) stated that the convicts committed the offences which contravenes Regulation 17 Paragraphs (1) (i) & (iii) of Kwara State Infectious Diseases (Emergency Prevention) Regulations 2020 and Section 152 of Penal Code Law.
