Lokoja Local Government Area, one of the 21 councils in kogi state on Sunday launched special programmr called “Fumigation exercise”as part its efforts to stop the spread of Coronavrus to the state, as the global fight against the pandemic disease hots up.
Launching the programme at the International market main entrance in Lokoja, the Director of Local Government (DLG), Hajiya Fati Abubakar called for increased collective fight against the spread of the disease to the state.
The DLG said,”As the main entrance to the Federal Capital Territory(FCT), we need to workhard in seeing that the pandemic does not enter the local government in particular and the state in general.”
Fati, who commended Governor Yahaya Bello for providing the local government with all assistance needed to make the exercise successful, added that the exercise would continue, despite the fact that no single case had been recorded, any where in the state.
“This is a start-up exercise aimed at sanitising our environment. We are fighting this pandemic from all angles. So we are fighting it through our environment.
” That is why His Excellency, Governor Yahaya Bello provided both finance and moral support to all the 21local government areas in the state to enable us fight Covid-19 pandemic,” she said.
The DLG appealed to the people of the area to take social distancing measure very serious by remaining indoor.
Duaglobalnews correspondent reports that the fumigation kicked-off from the Lokoja Main entrance (Up NATACO), proceeded to NNPC Filling Station Felele, to Ibro Garage Lokoja and Ganaja Junction, covering about 10 kilometres.
The DLG witnessed the fumigation, along with Malam Abubakar Yakubu, representative of Chairman of All Famers Association of Nigeria, Chairman NURTW, Health officials from the local government among others.
Meanwhile, partial observation of the stay at home ordered by the state government to chek the spread of the disease to remained as at the time of this report as many residents were seen on the streets pursuing various endeavours.
Some residents, who commented on the issue said most of them were business men and women, adding they could not afford to stay indoor, as they had to struggle to eke a living to keep life going.
They commended Lokoja Local Government Area for the taking bold step to guard against spreading the Coronavrus to the area.
“The information I gathered from the DLG, Hajia Fati Abubakar is that, kogi state government has provided funds for the local governments in the state for them to embark on fumigation of their respective areas of jurisdiction.
” Be that as it may and expected, we hope that other local governments will commence their fumigation too in no distant future.
“The fight against Coronavrus should be a collective responsibility, if we must we win this war against the most dangerous disease tomenting humanity in recent time,” Mr Mathew Onuh stressed.
