Five National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members deployed to Niger state for the one year mandatory national service are to repeat their service year while three others have their service extended to various numbers of months.
Niger State Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Funmilayo Ajayi, who disclosed this at the at passing out parade ceremony of the 2019 Batch ‘A’ Corps members said four other corps members received state Honours and Merit Awards for distinguishing themselves during their service to the state.
Ajayi gave the names of those that received state Honours for outstanding performances in their places of primary assignment as; Ikechukwu Ukamaka, a Medical Doctor, Amina Zainab Ahmed, Abubakar Ibrahim Ismail and Ugokwe Anthony Nkechi.
“These four Corps members are recognised for their various Community Development Projects (CDPs) that have impacted positively on the lives of their host communities,especially in the rural areas, “she said.
“Those who lost their bearing along the way and failed to conform to the ethics, norms and ideals of the NYSC scheme are to be sanctioned appropriately according to the dictates of the NYSC by-laws”.
“Two of the Batch ‘A’ compatriots deployed for the one year national service lost their lives due to illnesses during the service year”.
Appreciating the immense support from the state government especially in the area of hospitality, Ajayi implored the outgoing corps members to be good ambassadors of the scheme by putting into practice the lofty ideas bequeathed on them through the scheme.
The Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chairman, NYSC Governing Council in the state, Alhaji Ahmed Ibrahim Matane, urged the ex-corps members to sustain greater patriotism, dedication, discipline and be exemplary conduct they exhibited during their service year.
He announced N3, 000 transport money for each of the 2, 151 outgoing corps members as they departed the state for their various states of origin.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Mr. Emmanuel Umar, commended the founding fathers of the scheme for what he termed, ‘contributing immensely to the development and sustaining peaceful coexistence and unity among Nigerians’.
While promising more facilities at the state orientation camp and improvement of welfare package for the effective and efficient operations of the scheme, Bello said the reintroduction of Awards to certain category of corps members was to motivate the corps members.
