Kogi State Ministry of Information and Communication has embarked on anti- cultism campaign aimed at stamping out cultism in tertiary institutions in the state.
Duaglobalnews reports that cultism became prevalent in some of the higher institutions in the state in recent time sending fears into the minds of members of the public state.
The development prompted the Governor of the state, Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to give marching order to heads of such institutions to arrest the situation latest by February 29,2020 or be asked to leave office.
The commissioner in charge of the ministry, Evang. Kingsley Fanwo told the the Acting Vice- Chancellor, Kogi State University, Anyigba, Prof.Tai Oluwagbemi, that “cultism is against the Kogi brand”, and stressed the need for a “concerted anger and efforts against cultism.”
The Commissioner said the campaign was part of efforts by the ministry at sensitising students on the dangers of cultism and help tertiary institutions.
He said it was also to help heads of tertiary institutions match the directive of the Governor with action in stamping out cultism.
“Our Ministry is responsible for promoting the Kogi brand. We are peaceful people. We are industrious, goal getters who have contributed immensely to the greatness of our nation.
He said:”We are the centre of the nation; the genesis of Nigeria. These are the things we want to be known for, not cultism.
“It is heartwarming that the campaign of the state government against cultism is already yielding fruits.
“We will continue to do more to orientate the people, on the need to shun all forms of criminalities in our society.
“We commend the University Community for taking bold steps against cultism.”
Responding, Oluwagbemi thanked the Ministry for driving a consistent campaign against cultism on campuses, saying that the efforts had started yielding fruits.
He said the university had lined up programmes to effectively root out cultism from the institution.
Duaglobalnews reports that the University has earmarked February 28, for its students and staff that involve in cultism to denounce such crime and change a new leaf.
