Midnight Rainstorm Ravages Mokwa, Leaves Hundreds Homeless Amid Lingering Flood Trauma

Residents of Mokwa in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, North Central Nigeria,have once again been thrown into distress, following a devastating rainstorm that swept through the town, destroying homes and businesses and leaving hundreds without shelter.

The disaster, which struck in the early hours of Sunday, came with a fierce windstorm ,accompanying a heavy downpour that began around midnight.

By dawn, the scale of destruction had become evident, with rooftops torn off, buildings partially or completely collapsed, and livelihoods disrupted across several parts of the community.

Eyewitnesses described a night of fear and confusion as the violent winds pounded residential areas and commercial spaces, leaving behind a trail of wreckage estimated to be worth millions of naira.

Although no casualties were recorded, residents said the human impact has been severe, with many families now displaced and forced to seek refuge in public facilities and abandoned structures.

The latest disaster has compounded the suffering of Mokwa residents, many of whom are still grappling with the aftermath of last year’s catastrophic flooding that claimed lives and destroyed properties on a large scale.

For a community yet to fully recover, the renewed destruction has deepened vulnerability and heightened concerns over recurring climate-related disasters.

One of the affected residents, Biliqis, who spoke to our correspondent via telephone, painted a grim picture of the situation.

She lamented that many people have been left without roofs over their heads, calling on government and the private sector for urgent intervention.

“Since yesterday, many families have been sleeping without shelter. We are appealing to the state government and kind-hearted Nigerians to come to our aid,” she said.

Investigations further revealed that the incident has triggered an acute accommodation crisis in Mokwa and its surrounding areas, as displaced residents scramble for temporary shelter under difficult conditions.

Confirming the development, the Chairman of Mokwa Local Government Area, Alhaji Abdullahi Muregi, disclosed that the council has formally notified the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA) and other relevant authorities, seeking urgent response and relief support for the affected communities.

The incident has once again underscored the growing threat of extreme weather events in parts of Nigeria, raising concerns about preparedness, urban planning, and the urgent need for sustainable environmental and disaster management strategies.

As Mokwa counts its losses, the call for swift government intervention and long-term resilience measures grows louder, with residents hoping that this latest tragedy will not be met with delayed response.
