A human rights organisation, Guard Time Information (GTI) Human Rights Activists Nationwide, has strongly condemned the reported threat to the life of former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate, Peter Obi, describing it as a grave danger to Nigeria’s democracy and national stability.
In a statement issued in Abuja, and obtained by our correspondent on Wednesday,the group expressed deep concern over the alleged threat said to have occurred in Edo State, warning that political intimidation and violence must never be allowed to take root in the country’s democratic process.
GTI, a non-partisan body committed to the defence of democratic values, rule of law, and fundamental human rights, stressed that any threat to the life of a political leader,regardless of party affiliation, constitutes a direct attack on democracy itself.
The organisation called on the newly appointed acting Inspector General of Police,Tunji Disu and the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force to urgently deploy intelligence units to thoroughly investigate the allegation and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted without delay.
“Nigeria’s democracy must not be reduced to a battlefield of intimidation, harassment or violence.Political parties and their supporters must embrace issue-based campaigns, healthy competition and respect for opposing views, rather than hostility or personal attacks,”the statement read.
The group further emphasised that political rivalry should never degenerate into threats to life or acts capable of destabilising the nation.
It urged leaders across party lines to promote tolerance, dialogue and peaceful engagement in the interest of unity and national development.
GTI Chairman, Mr. Bibi Oduku, who addressed journalists in Abuja alongside legal practitioners and fellow human rights advocates, insisted that anyone found culpable, irrespective of status or political leaning, must face the full weight of the law.
“No individual is above the law. Justice must not only be done but be seen to be done to deter future occurrences,” he said.
The organisation also urged security agencies to act swiftly and professionally to reassure Nigerians that their safety and democratic rights remain protected.
Reaffirming its commitment to peaceful coexistence and constitutional order, GTI declared: “Nigeria belongs to all of us. Let us safeguard it together.”
