Nupe Natives of Lokoja, Kogi State, north central Nigeria,have taken a major step toward community-driven development with the launch of the CAMPDAVID Multipurpose Cooperative Union Limited, a body officially registered with the Kogi State Government.
Our correspondent reports that the cooperative union, unveiled in Lokoja over the weekend, is designed to promote socio-economic development within the Nupe native community and benefit residents across Lokoja.
No fewer than twelve cooperative societies have already been registered to operate under the umbrella of the union.
The formal launch took place during the first Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Nupe Natives of Lokoja for 2026, where the Etsu Lokoja and Chairman, Lokoja Native Traditional Council, His Royal Highness Emmanuel Akamisoko Dauda Shelika–Nyamkpa IV, performed the flag-off ceremony.
The AGM, which also served as a platform to celebrate Nupe culture, featured robust discussions on practical strategies for attracting development and improving the welfare of community members.
In his address, the royal father described the cooperative union and its affiliated societies as vital instruments for mobilising resources and stimulating self-help initiatives capable of improving living standards.
According to him, the cooperatives would enable members to pool funds for community projects such as the drilling of motorised boreholes for potable water, rural electrification, and the establishment of health clinics, among others.
“The need to complement government efforts in providing basic infrastructure for improved living conditions cannot be overemphasised. This is why we, as a people, are determined to take responsibility for our development,” he said.
HRH Shelika–Nyamkpa IV also urged youths in the community to embrace skills acquisition and vocational training, including tailoring, welding, fabrication, carpentry, plumbing, hairdressing and farming, as pathways to self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods.
He further disclosed that planned programmes for the year include summer studies for students, medical outreach programmes for the less privileged, as well as cultural and political summits aimed at strengthening unity and progress within the community.
The monarch commended Kogi State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, for his inclusive approach to governance and development, noting that the administration has continued to carry all segments of society along, irrespective of political, ethnic or religious affiliations.
He reaffirmed the loyalty of Nupe Natives in Lokoja to the current state administration and assured that their support would remain unwavering as the government continues its development drive.
