A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) attached to Mobile Police Force (Mopol) 12, Niger State, Isah Abdullahi, popularly known as Kunkuri, has died after allegedly shooting himself during an official arms audit, following revelations of missing rifles and thousands of rounds of ammunition linked to suspected banditry in the state.
This is contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer,PPRO, for the Police Command,DSP Wasiu Abiodun, in Minna and a copy available to The Reporters on Friday.
He ststed that the incident occurred on December 16, 2025, at about 2:30 p.m., at the Mopol 12 armoury located within B Division Police Command, Paikoro Road, Minna, during a routine annual audit of arms and ammunition conducted by a team of detectives from Abuja.
According to him,what triggered the tragedy was the discovery that 13 AK-47 rifles and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition were missing or unaccounted for, adding that the audit reportedly covered only the AK-47 section of the armoury before the fatal incident unfolded.
DSP Abdullahi, who was the Head of the Armoury, had sole electronic access to the facility,he further revealed.
Investigations deepened with the arrest of Inspector John Moses, attached to the Niger State Government House, who allegedly confessed that the late DSP supplied him arms and ammunition, subsequently sold to bandits and hoodlums operating in Erena community, Shiroro Local Government Area of the state,through the inspector’s brother.
Operatives of the Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) reportedly took suspects to Abuja for further interrogation.
According to the police image maker,DSP Abdullahi was later returned from Abuja and escorted to the armoury for a physical verification of weapons.
He added that during the exercise,DSP Abdullahi allegedly picked a pistol from the armoury and shot himself in the head, dying instantly in the presence of officers who accompanied him but failed to prevent the act.
The police authorities have arrested the accompanying officers for negligence, while they face orderly room trial.
Additionally, four other police officers linked to the late DSP are currently under interrogation, as a special NSA team has taken over 24-hour security of the armoury to prevent further compromise.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police Niger State,CP. Adamu Elleman, said the incident occurred during an official audit, adding that an autopsy would be conducted to determine the actual cause of death, even as investigations continue.
