Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) retirees may have finally breathed a sigh of relief as the first phase of their long-awaited arrears is set to be paid on or before November 21, 2025.
This assurance was given by the National Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Contributory Pension Scheme (NUPCPS), Comrade Sylva Nwaiwu, during an online broadcast to members across the country on Sunday.
According to Nwaiwu, the arrears cover several outstanding pension adjustments, including the general pension increments of 2007, 2010, the 2019 consequential adjustment, the 2024 allowance based on the national minimum wage, and the N32,000 monthly award per pensioner from August 2024.
“The payments have been structured in phases according to the way funds were released by PenCom to the Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs). To the best of my knowledge, a large percentage of the amounts for the pension increments was released to the PFAs last week,” he said.
He added that this strategic phased payment approach was designed to ensure transparency and avoid confusion.
“It is expected that the first phase will begin before the end of this week, say November 21, 2025. Additionally, the funds meant for the N32,000 allowance are being finalized and will soon be released to the PFAs,” he stated.
Our Correspondent report that the broadcast was greeted with relief and commendation from CPS pensioners.
Malam Mohammed Ipemida Audu described the news as “cheering,” noting that the staggered payment process will help ensure transparency and allow pensioners to track their entitlements.
“Congratulations to the National Chairman and his EXCO members for a mission accomplished,” he said.
Another pensioner, who identified himself simply as SMB, expressed gratitude to the leadership of NUPCPS.
“We pledge to continue to give you our unalloyed support for the emancipation of retirees under the CPS. You have given us assurances, hopes, and expectations,and it shall come to pass, God willing,” he said.
Concerned Nigerians speaking on pension issues told our correspondent in Lokoja on Sunday that those responsible for implementing the payments must meet the expectations of the pensioners.
They expressed optimism that the planned phased payment will bring renewed hope to CPS pensioners who have waited nearly two decades for their entitlements.
