Nigeria’s qualification path for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has narrowed sharply after the Super Eagles booked a place in the CAF play-off final with a dramatic 4–1 extra-time victory over Gabon.
But despite the celebration, one question remains on the minds of many fans: how many matches are left before Nigeria can actually qualify for the World Cup?
Nigeria’s hopes are still alive, but the journey is not over. The Eagles missed out on automatic qualification when South Africa topped Group C on the final day, forcing Nigeria into the CAF runners-up play-off series.
A 4–0 win over Benin Republic, boosted by Frank Onyeka’s late goal, ensured Nigeria edged Burkina Faso on goal difference to reach the four-team mini-tournament. As the highest-ranked side among the entrants, the Eagles were paired with Gabon in the semi-finals and advanced after goals from Chidera Ejuke and Victor Osimhen in extra time.
DR Congo, who defeated Cameroon 1–0 through a 91st-minute winner from Chancel Mbemba, will now face Nigeria in the CAF play-off final.
So, How Many Matches Are Left?
Nigeria have potentially two more matches to play but depending on FIFA rankings, it could also be just one.
CAF Play-off Final: Nigeria vs DR Congo
Date: Sunday, November 16
Venue: Neutral ground, Morocco
Outcome: Winner qualifies for the inter-confederation play-offs in March 2026.
Inter-Confederation Play-offs (Mexico, March 2026)
This stage will feature six teams from five continents competing for two remaining World Cup slots.
However, there is an important twist:
Why Nigeria May Play Only One Match in Mexico
The two highest-ranked teams among the six will bypass the semi-finals and move straight into the final play-off round.
If Nigeria rank inside the top two at that time:
They will play only one match in Mexico. Win it, and they qualify.
If Nigeria rank outside the top two:
They must play two matches, a semi-final and then a final to secure a World Cup ticket.
