The Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Niger State chapter, Most Rev. Dr. Bulus Dauwa Yohanna, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently prioritise measures that will put food on the tables of struggling Nigerians.
Yohanna, who is also the Catholic Bishop of Kontagora Diocese, lamented that millions of citizens are alive today “only by the mercy of God” as many lack the financial capacity to afford food.
He stressed that stabilising the economy through effective regulation of food prices should be of paramount importance to government.
Delivering his message to mark Nigeria’s 65th Independence Day anniversary, the CAN Chairman encouraged Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers, seeking God’s intervention to end the twin challenges of hunger and insecurity.
“In times like this, Nigerians should commit the country and its leaders into the hands of God for an end to the prevailing security situation and harsh economic realities that have sent many to their early graves,” he said.
He reminded the government of the daily struggles of citizens, expressing CAN’s belief that though Nigeria’s challenges are enormous, they are surmountable.
“By the grace of God, there will be light at the end of the tunnel,” he assured.
The religious leader also joined other Nigerians in urging President Tinubu to stabilise the economy, secure lives and property, and deliver relief from armed banditry.
“As you plan to boost Nigeria’s economy, Mr. President, we look forward to increased trade, a fall in the cost of living and food items in particular, a decline in inflation, a stronger currency, and growing external reserves,” Yohanna added.
On the situation in Niger State, the Catholic Bishop appealed to residents to intensify prayers for peace, unity, and prosperity, as well as for the success of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s administration.
While congratulating Nigerlites on the nation’s 65th independence anniversary, he urged the governor to remain resolute in securing lives and livelihoods in line with the New Niger Agenda.
Bishop Yohanna also admonished Christians not to dwell only on Nigeria’s challenges but to reflect on God’s mercies and faithfulness in preserving the nation as one entity despite its numerous trials.
