The Bauchi State Muslim Parliament has thrown its weight behind the peace-building efforts of Senator Shehu Buba, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Security and National Intelligence.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Abuja, the group’s Chairman, Ahmad Yusuf, declared the parliament’s “total support” for Senator Buba’s adoption of dialogue as a tool for resolving conflicts, particularly in Northern Nigeria.

Yusuf, an engineer, praised the Bauchi South lawmaker for his dedication to peaceful conflict resolution and national security, noting that his approach aligns with the organisation’s vision of promoting unity and peaceful coexistence.

He highlighted Buba’s initiatives, including frameworks for fostering harmony between farming communities and pastoralists, adding that the senator’s blend of dialogue and economic empowerment reflects successful models once applied in the Niger Delta region.

Another member of the parliament, Hamza Abubakar, stressed that years of military campaigns against insurgency and banditry had failed to deliver lasting peace. He cited the positive outcomes of dialogue in Kaduna State, which he said created a more peaceful environment.

“If dialogue has yielded results here, why can’t we allow its initiator to expand the same approach to other parts of the country for peaceful coexistence?” he asked.

Abubakar also condemned what he described as a “vicious smear campaign” against Senator Buba, dismissing it as character assassination designed to undermine his contributions to national security. He urged politicians to refrain from exploiting security issues for political gain.

He further appealed to all stakeholders to support dialogue-based peacebuilding efforts and called on the government to address the grievances of conflict victims as part of a holistic security strategy.

Senator Buba has earned widespread recognition for his advocacy of non-kinetic measures to complement military operations in tackling insecurity. His strategy—anchored on dialogue, reconciliation, and socio-economic renewal—draws from his academic background in Peace Studies and Conflict Management.

He is currently pursuing a PhD focused on the underlying drivers of banditry in Zamfara and Kaduna States.
