The Executive Director of the Centre for Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, Comrade Idris Miliki, has strongly condemned the recent killing of three policemen at Okoloke in Yagba West Local Government Area of Kogi State while on lawful duty.
Miliki,in a statement in Lokoja on Tuesday, described the incident as “condemnable and worrisome,” stressing the urgent need for a new strategy in community resilience across the state.
“For security officers performing their legitimate duties to be killed in such a manner is a sad development. Despite the efforts of our security men and the state government in recent times, it is unfortunate that this type of madness could still occur,” he said.
He sympathized with the families of the slain officers and the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State, while urging for holistic community involvement in the state’s security architecture.
Miliki reiterated that the tragic killing further reinforced the call for the establishment of state police in Nigeria.
He urged communities, villages, and local governments in Kogi to boost efforts in setting up more security committees to complement conventional security agencies.
According to him, such committees should include retired and serving security personnel who are indigenes of the communities, while resources should be mobilized by both private and public stakeholders to support the efforts of the state and federal governments.
“We must always be vigilant and conscious of our community security situation at all times. Early warning and response mechanisms, as well as credible and timely security information, must be shared with relevant institutions and agencies,” he said.
Miliki prayed for the repose of the souls of the fallen officers, describing them as gallant men who paid the supreme price in the line of duty.
