The traditional ruler of Mokwa, known as the Ndalile, Alhaji Muhammed Aliyu, has raised alarm over the growing risk of a disease outbreak following the devastating flash floods that ravaged communities in Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State.
The flood, which has so far claimed about 200 lives and displaced thousands, left behind decomposing bodies and debris along the water plains, creating an overwhelming stench that now hangs over the area.
Speaking when he received the President of the National Council of Women Societies (NCWS), Mrs. Justina Yakubu, who led a delegation to sympathize with flood victims, the Ndalile stressed the urgent need for fumigation of the affected communities to prevent an impending health crisis.
“The foul smell from decomposing human and animal bodies, as well as debris, poses serious health risks,” Alhaji Aliyu warned.
“If nothing urgent is done, air pollution from these decaying materials will only worsen the suffering of our people and could lead to a major public health disaster,” he warned.
He appealed to relevant authorities to act swiftly, emphasizing that failure to intervene could overwhelm the community and strain government resources.
While expressing gratitude to the NCWS for their support, especially to women and children affected by the disaster, the Ndalile noted that the pervasive stench in the area indicated that many bodies may still be trapped under debris swept in by the floodwaters.
Earlier, NCWS President Mrs. Yakubu said their visit was to show solidarity with the victims and offer prayers for the souls of the departed, as well as for strength and healing for the survivors.
“We pray that God watches over the orphans and widows and helps them rebuild their lives,” she said.
The NCWS delegation also visited the Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp, where they distributed relief materials including clothing, food items, and toiletries to alleviate the suffering of displaced residents.
