,,, Telecoms Giant, Government Encouraged to Seek Amicable Resolution Benefiting All Stakeholders
By Dada Ahmed in Lokoja.
The fear of being thrown into Nigeria’s bloated unemployment market has gripped MTN staff in Kogi State.
Our correspondent reports that this anxiety comes as the face-off between the telecommunications giant and the state government, over tax-related and other issues remain unresolved as of Monday, April 28, 2025.
Recent findings by The Reporters have raised concerns over the ongoing controversial issues between the Kogi State Government and MTN.
While there was optimism that a resolution would be reached soon, an alarming post circulating on social media platforms has cast doubt on this hope.
The post, which prominently features the official MTN logo indicates that MTN will exit Kogi State, citing inability to meet the exorbitant fees imposed by the state government, and signaling the potential permanent shutdown of operations in the state.
It reads:Breaking: “MTN to leave Kogi State as the company says it can’t afford the huge amount the kogi State Government imposes on them, and has no option than to shutdown permanently in the state.”
In an exclusive interview with two MTN staff members in Lokoja on Sunday, who wished to remain anonymous, they called on MTN and the state government to engage in amicable dialogue to resolve the issues that led to the suspension of MTN’s services in the state.
The employees expressed grave concern that a permanent shutdown would not only mean losing their jobs and unable to cater for their dependants, coupled with negative effects on the economic activities, generally, in the state.
MTN subscribers in Lokoja, including Salawu Mohammed, Michael Omeiza, and Karim Mohammad, have also voiced their concerns and call for a peaceful resolution, stressing that the continuation of the dispute would have detrimental effects on the public and the broader community.
“In light of the situation, I respectfully urge both the Kogi State Government and MTN to prioritize dialogue and work together towards an amicable settlement.
“The outcome of such efforts will not only benefit the employees and subscribers but will also foster a positive and sustainable relationship between the company and the state.
It will take into consideration, the interest of the parties involved and ultimately serve the best interests of the people,” Omeiza appealed.
