The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has directed a thorough investigation and immediate prosecution of a motorist involved in the repeated assault of an FRSC official.
This directive was conveyed in a statement issued on Monday in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide.
Expressing deep concern over the increasing incidents of assaults on FRSC personnel while they perform their lawful duties, Mohammed described such actions as unacceptable.
He commended the professionalism and restraint demonstrated by the Lekki Unit Command staff, Lagos, during the incident.
” Despite the motorist’s provocations, their conduct reflected the core values of the Corps,” he said.
The e incident occurred in November, on the Oko-Ado stretch of the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
According to the report, at approximately 3:54 PM, an FRSC patrol team flagged down a Toyota Corolla (registration number EPE690HH) for a seatbelt violation.
Upon inspecting the vehicle’s documents, officials discovered the papers had expired in December 2022, leading to the impoundment of the car.
While the driver complied, a female passenger in the vehicle became confrontational, verbally abusing the FRSC personnel and threatening legal action against them.
Despite several attempts to de-escalate the situation, the passenger created a public scene, attempting to gain sympathy from other road users. When her efforts failed, she resorted to physical assault, as captured in a viral video.
The altercation persisted even after the vehicle was impounded at the Lekki Unit Command.
Eventually, the Unit Commander sought assistance from the Divisional Police Officer at Ajah Police Station, leading to the arrest of both the passenger and the driver for further investigation.
Malam Mohammed called on the public to address grievances through proper administrative channels or legal means rather than resorting to violence.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring justice in the case and warned against any form of assault on FRSC personnel, emphasizing that such behavior would no longer be tolerated.
The Corps Marshal expressed confidence that justice would not only be served but done promptly to deter similar incidents in the future.
