Residents of Lokoja, Kogi State, North Central Nigeria, have breathed a sigh of relief following the easing of anxiety over the likelihood of flooding in 2024.
Our correspondent, who visited the River Niger and its tributaries in Lokoja on Saturday, reports that the water level has receded to a point that no longer poses a threat for this year.
Some residents of Gadumo, a community located on the bank of the river, expressed gratitude to God during their interview with our correspondent for answering their prayers to prevent flooding in Lokoja and other local government areas of the state this year.
Despite the receding water levels, some residents of Lokoja living near the River Niger have relocated to higher ground as a precaution against potential future floods.
People still residing near the river have been advised to relocate.
Our correspondent recalls that the 2012 and 2022 floods in Kogi State remain a tragic chapter in the state’s history, as they devastated communities, destroyed houses, farmlands, and other valuable properties, and even led to loss of some lives.
