The two 500-capacity state-of-the art TETfund hostel meant for the Federal University, Lokoja, Kogi State have been left unoccupied for years for fear of kidnap of the students of the institution.
The Pro-Chancellor and Chairman Governing Council of the Federal University, Lokoja, kogi state, Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba,made the disclosure in his speech at the 8th Convocation ceremony of the institution in Lokoja on Saturday.
The Pro-Chancellor noted that federal University,Lokoja constantly contends with serious security challenges which is negatively impacting its pace of development, indeed.
He advised that while the council and management are seeking creative options to beefing up security on the campuses of the university, federal government intervention becomes imperative to ameliorate the situation.
He appealed to the Governor of kogi state, Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo, whom he described as “our dear Governor”, to see the University as part of his constituency deserving his attention.
“We shall be very glad if you build the perimeter fence for us and issue us a Certificate of Occupancy for our land,” he urged.
Commenting on the operational costs of the universities in Nigeria ,Sen. Ndo-egba said that in addressing the critical financial challenges faced by Nigerian universities these days, it is essential for the federal government to provide targeted economic concessions to reduce their operating costs.
He argued that these institutions are not just centres of learning, but the foundations for Nigeria’s intellectual and innovative future.
He said:”Therefore, I propose that the government considers special provisions to reduce the operating costs of Federal University Lokoja and all the universities in the country.
“For instance, removing Federal University, Lokoja from Band A in the federal electricity tariff structure and offering the university a concessional rate would significantly reduce the university’s utility expenses, allowing more resources to be directed toward educational development and research, rather than overhead costs.
“Additionally, the government should expand access to financial facilities by offering loans to universities at special interest rates, far below the current commercial levels.
“This would ease the financial burden on institutions like Federal University Lokoja and allow us to continue fostering the kind of academic excellence that drives national progress.
The Pro-Chancellor called on the graduates of the university to uphold integrity in all their future endeavors.
He reminded them that integrity is the cornerstone of trust, adding that in whatever field they might find themselves, their reputation would be built not only on their qualifications and skills, but on their honesty and ethical conduct.
“Never compromise your values for short-term gains. In a world where shortcuts and unethical behaviors often seem tempting, I urge you to resist them.
“Always remember that true success is built on zeal and doing what is right, especially when no one is watching.
“I also encourage you to remain focused, hardworking and steadfast. The journey you begin today will not always be easy. You will face obstacles, temptations, setbacks and moments of doubt, but remember that it is in these moments that your character is tested, and perseverance is what will see you through.
” Hard work remains the only pathway to lasting success, and it is through consistent effort and dedication that you will achieve your goals,” he urged.
The Chairman, however acknowledge the exponential growth witnessed in the university under the capable leadership of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Olayemi Akinwumi, whom he note,is doing exceptionally well.
“We have seen significant progress in academic programmes, infrastructure, and research. Federal University Lokoja is steadily growing into a globally competitive institution, and this is largely due to the dedication and vision of the university management, staff, and students,” he affirmed.
The Pro-Chancellor said that in line with the commitment the governing council to further developing the university, it remains steadfast in providing the necessary governance and support to ensure that the university continues on this upward trajectory.
In this regard,he expressed the commitment of the council to continue to focus on creating an environment that fosters academic excellence, innovation, and partnerships that would enhance the reputation and impact of the institution on both national and global scales.
The Vice Chancellor of the university,Prof. Olayemi Akinwumi, disclosed that a total of 2,196 students ,including postgraduate students were awarded first and higher degrees across diverse fields of study, having been having been found worthy in both character and learning.
