Mr. Titus Alonge, the Chief Executive Officer of TEEN Educational Development NGO, has urged the federal government to closely monitor how local government chairmen in Nigeria will utilize their newly granted financial autonomy.
This call comes in light of a recent Supreme Court judgement directing state governments to relinquish control over local council finances, ensuring direct allocation disbursement for the benefit of the rural populace.
Speaking in Lokoja, with the Correspondent of The Reporters, Mr. Alonge emphasized the importance of vigilant oversight to prevent misappropriation of funds intended for grassroots development.
He expressed concerns that unchecked autonomy could lead to corruption, urging local leaders to prioritize infrastructure, education, and social welfare initiatives.
“It is crucial that local chairmen do not view this autonomy as an opportunity for personal gain at the expense of their constituents.
“With increased funding at their disposal, we expect significant improvements in rural areas, including reduced youth unemployment and enhanced agricultural productivity,”Alonge further urged.
He emphasized the role of education in transforming communities, calling for robust funding of educational programmes to increase school enrollment and prepare students for higher education.
Mr. Alonge underscored the need for transparency and accountability in the management of local government resources, adding that, “Effective governance at the local level is key to achieving sustainable development and improving the livelihoods of our people.”
