Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago of Niger State has assured that no youth in the state will participate in the nationwide protest scheduled from August 1 to 10, citing concerns over maintaining peace amidst economic challenges.
Speaking at a town hall meeting with key stakeholders at the Justice Legbo Kutigi International Conference Center in Minna, Governor Bago reassured the community of Niger State’s commitment to peace.
He said,”We, as youths of this state, have distanced ourselves from the planned nationwide protest because we are peaceful and prioritize peace and tranquility.”
Addressing the youth directly, the governor urged against agitation, advocating instead for dialogue to find constructive solutions.
He further urged,”You can start a demonstration, but you cannot end demonstrations. To youths who are agitating for this protest, let us end these agitations, let us communicate and not get tired of dialogue on the best way forward.”
Meanwhile, the Governor has announced a significant initiative to alleviate socio-economic challenges facing the people in the state,revealing the release of 50,000 metric tonnes of assorted grains at a 50% discount to them.
“We will be releasing 50,000 metric tonnes to be sold at 50% of its present price, and we aim to slash food prices further by 90% before the end of the year,” Governor Bago added but called on security agencies to ensure that the grains reach those in need.
Governor Bago expressed support for local government council autonomy but advised council chairmen to enhance their revenue generation capacities to meet their obligations, including salary payments.
Asserting the state’s self-sufficiency, Governor Bago emphasized, “I do not need FAAC in Niger State. The roads I am building, the projects I have undertaken are not funded by FAAC. “We are producing, and that is the secret behind what we are doing.
“The food I am offering at a 50% subsidy was initially earmarked for export, but due to the hardships faced by our people, we have opened our warehouses to feed Nigerlites,” he asserted.
