No fewer two students(females) of the Nasarawa State University,Keffi, north central Nigeria, on Friday, lost their lives during a stamped that characterized the distribution of palliatives to the students of the institution.
Our correspondent reports that the tragic event took place at the convocation center of the University, the venue slated by the state government to distribute palliative to them and their colleagues.
Our Correspondent reliably gathered that students had converged at the convocation center as early as 4.00 a m waiting for the arrival of the Governor of the state,Engr.Abdullahi Sule who was expected to personally supervise proceedings of the distribution of the palliatives.
The Reporters further learnt that that thugs and miscreant cashed in on the advantage of the mammoth crowd at the venue and sneak into the crowd for their own palliatives.
With the security personnel overpowered, the surging crowd with the miscreants and thugs forced their way into the convocation arena and carted away bags of rice, a development that led to the stampeding of the two students and their death.
Sources told our correspondent that seventeen of victims sustained various degrees of injury and were rushed to the Federal Medical hospital,Keffi for medical attention.
Meanwhile, Governor Abdullahi Sule has expressed deep concern over the tragic incident and promised a thorough investigation into the circumstances that led to it with a view that culprits would not go unpunished.
The governor,who in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Malam Ibrahim Addra, noted that similar distributions were carried at the Federal University, Lafia, Polytechnic, Lafia and College of Health science keffi without any hitch,wondered why that of the state University could be different.
Our also gathered that the police Command in the state quickly deployed some of its men to the area to restore peace.
The names of the two students that died in the incident could not be ascertained as at the time of this report.
Reacting to the sad event, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Suleima Muhammed and Mr.Peter Ahemba, SAA on public affairs to the governor, described the incident as most unfortunate but traced it on in patient on the part of the students.
