Dr.Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo,(63),Secretary General, Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) is dead according to the Group Managing Director, Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mal Mele Kyari.
The NNPC boss,who made the disclosure in a statement on his verified twitter handle, @MKKyari, at 4.32a.m Wednesday, further revealed that the deceased died at about 11p.m on Tuesday at the of 63.
Kyari described Barkindo’s death as a great loss to his immediate family, NNPC Nigeria, OPEC and global energy community.
”We lost our esteemed Dr Muhammad Sanusi Barkindo. He died at about 11p.m yesterday 5th July 2022.
“Certainly, a great loss to his immediate family, the NNPC, our country Nigeria, the OPEC and the global energy community. Burial arrangements will be announced shortly,”he wrote.
Sources said Barkindo,whose cause of death could not be ascertained as at the time of this report, was warming to hand over the mantle of leadership of the world oil body to his successor in Vienna before the end of July,2022,when death came calling.

He previously served as Acting Secretary General in 2006, represented Nigeria on OPEC’s Economic Commission Board during 1993–2008, led the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation during 2009–2010, and has headed Nigeria’s technical delegation to UN climate negotiations since 1991.
