The President of Commonwealth Scholars and Fellows Alumni Association (COSFAN), Dr Abiola Adimula, has called for the effective justice delivery system through family court in Kwara state.
Adimula made the call on Monday in Ilorin at a three-day training of magistrates and area court judges, organised by COSFAN in collaboration with the Kwara State Judiciary and Women and Child Watch Initiatives.
She, however, called for the upgrading of the family court to the high court level, to enable more family issues get justice under family court.
According to her, the event is put together by the COSFAN as an annual programme of community service toward impacting the Nigerian society positively.
The President of the association explained that with a strong family court, violent crime, sex trafficking, forced labor and child abuse would be the thing of the past.
Adimula said that the creation of family court was to ensure that children and family cases are filed and determined in special court for speedy access to justice.
“The International Community values peace and justice and calls for stronger Judicial systems that would enforce laws and work toward a more peaceful and just society.
” The event is put together to enhance access to justice for family cases, especially matters that involves children under the Child Rights Act 2003 or Child Rights Law of Kwara State 2006.
“With increase in violence and abuse against persons and especially children
globally.
” It is expected that where there is a strong institution of the court to
address the menace, the interest of the child and others will be better served.
“Thus, the reason why we have invited schools to participate in this event is to
sensitize them as a voice to children in Kwara State
“The main objective of COSFAN is to promote and advance national development,” Adimula added.
On his part, Justice Salisu Garba, the Administrator, National Judicial Institute (NIJ),Abuja, said that the judicial institute was ready to collaborate with COSFAN in building an effective justice delivery through family court.
Garba, who was represented by Director of Studies (NIJ), Mr Abdulazeez Olumo, said the institute was ready to support COSFAN.
He said the COSFAN should send their proposal to the institute for assessment of approval of family court at the high court level.
The Olupo of Ajase-Ipo, Oba Ismail Yahaya, said the event was timely, in view of the raging issue of child molestation and abuse in many societies in the country.
