The story of Aminu Lawal now hangs heavily in the air of Lokoja, Kogi State,like a question no one can answer, and a pain no family should ever endure.
Aminu was not just another young man. He was a symbol of hope, resilience, and quiet determination. A fresh graduate of the Department of Building Technology, University of Maiduguri, he had braved the odds in a region often troubled by insecurity. He studied against all challenges and returned home with dreams in his eyes,dreams of service, of purpose, and of a better future after his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
But those dreams were never to be.
On that fateful Wednesday morning, March 18, Aminu left his home in Otokiti Estate, just as he had done many times before. He stepped out to hustle, driving his tricycle (Keke NAPEP), pursuing honest earnings and carrying the weight of responsibility with dignity. His parents watched him go, never imagining it would be the last time they would see their son alive.
As the hours stretched into the night and Aminu did not return, fear began to creep in. Calls were made. Neighbours joined the search. His parents, gripped by anxiety, clung to hope.
Then came the devastating discovery.
The following day, along a lonely bush path opposite the Central Bank area in Zone 8, area of Lokoja,Aminu was found lifeless. The scene told a story too painful to comprehend,a young man full of life, brutally cut down. His tricycle was gone. His future, stolen.
The devastating news spread like wildfire.
Grief engulfed Otokiti Estate of community.His family collapsed under the weight of the tragedy. Friends and siblings wept openly. Neighbours stood in stunned silence. A mother mourned the child she had nurtured. A father faced the unbearable reality of burying his son.
He was laid to rest quietly, in accordance with Islamic rites, but the cries for justice only grew louder.
Amid rising tension and whispers of possible interference, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Command, has assured the public that it is not resting on its oars in its efforts to unearth the perpetrators of what many have described as a heinous crime.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Hafzat Oyiza Salihu, addressed growing concerns with a tone of assurance and resolve.
“We are still investigating the case. We will probe it to a logical conclusion, and the outcome of the investigations will be made public,” she promised.
Her words come at a time when many fear justice could be derailed. Reports of mounting pressure to release a suspect have stirred anger within the community and beyond.There is a palpable sense of urgency,an insistence that Aminu’s death must not become just another forgotten statistic.
An anonymous voice within the community captured the collective grief and determination.
“Aminu trained himself through school in faraway Maiduguri. He survived all the dangers there, only to be murdered at home. The least we can do is ensure his killers are brought to justice,” he said
Indeed, the irony is both striking and painful. A young man who endured the uncertainties of life in Maiduguri returned home in search of peace, only to meet a tragic end.
Now, Lokoja waits.
A grieving family waits.
A community waits.
And a nation watches,hoping that this time, justice will not only be promised, but delivered.
Because Aminu Lawal’s story must not end in silence.
