In Nigeria’s evolving agricultural economy, poultry farming has long stood as a dependable pathway to income generation, household stability, and food security. Yet, beneath this promise lies a persistent structural challenge,egg theft,

an issue that continues to erode profits, discourage investment, and undermine confidence in agribusiness.

What appears, at first glance, as a simple case of farm pilfering is, in reality, a complex systems failure involving weak surveillance, human limitations, and poor data accountability. At Summit University, Offa, however, this challenge is being redefined,not as an intractable problem, but as an opportunity for scientific intervention and technological innovation.

Understanding Egg Theft.
Through a Systems Lens
Egg theft in poultry farms is not merely a behavioural issue; it is rooted in operational inefficiencies. In large-scale poultry environments,often with thousands of birds,manual egg collection and record-keeping create gaps that are difficult to monitor in real time.

At the university’s Kola Balogun College of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering, students are applying engineering principles to real-life agricultural problems. Their work is not confined to laboratories; it extends to farms, where technology is tested under real operating conditions.
One notable innovation is Offa 1, a student-developed robotic system designed for farm surveillance and monitoring. Rather than relying solely on static cameras, the robot introduces mobility, autonomy, and adaptability into farm management.

From a scientific standpoint, such a system integrates multiple technological components:
Sensors and machine vision: Enabling the robot to detect movement, monitor activity, and capture visual data.
Embedded systems: Allowing real-time processing and decision-making.

Autonomous navigation: Ensuring the robot can move through poultry environments without human control.
Data analytics: Providing insights into patterns of production and possible anomalies.

This combination transforms poultry farming into a semi-automated, intelligence-driven system where losses can be detected, traced, and significantly reduced.

With support from MOMAS Group, led by Kola Balogun, students are exposed to industry-relevant challenges and mentorship. This collaboration ensures that innovations like Offa 1 are not academic prototypes but functional tools capable of solving real problems.

The application of robotics in poultry farming extends beyond preventing theft. It signals a broader shift toward precision agriculture, where technology enhances efficiency, reduces waste, and improves productivity.

Improved farm security: Continuous monitoring reduces vulnerability to theft.
Operational efficiency: Automation minimizes human error and labour costs.
Data-driven farming: Farmers can make informed decisions based on real-time insights.
Scalability: Technology enables expansion without proportional increases in risk.

In a country where agriculture remains a major employer, such innovations could contribute significantly to rural development, youth employment, and food security.

Beyond the technology itself, the deeper impact lies in human capital development. At the Kola Balogun College of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Engineering, students are being trained to think critically, design solutions, and apply knowledge across disciplines.
