The Niger State Government has ordered the immediate closure of all public and private primary and secondary schools following the abduction of pupils at St. Mary’s Catholic School, Papiri, in Agwara Local Government Area.
Governor Umaru Bago give the directive on Saturday after a security meeting with heads of security agencies to assess the situation.
According to a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor said the shutdown extends to all missionary and Islamic schools, as well as Federal Government Colleges across the state.
He added that all tertiary institutions in Niger North Senatorial District and vulnerable areas in Niger East Senatorial District would also remain closed until further notice.
Bago described the abduction as “sad and unfortunate,” assuring residents that security agencies have intensified efforts to ensure the safe return of the abducted pupils and other victims.
He noted that the exact number of kidnapped children has not yet been confirmed, as the Department of State Services (DSS), the police and other security agencies are conducting a headcount to determine the figures.
The governor urged security agencies, civil society groups, organised labour, and religious leaders to support ongoing rescue operations, reaffirming the government’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property.
