President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has postponed his scheduled trips to Johannesburg, South Africa, and Luanda, Angola, to allow for comprehensive security briefings following the abduction of schoolgirls in Kebbi State and the attack on worshippers at Christ Apostolic Church, Eruku, in Kwara State.
A statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga in Abuja., said the President approved the deployment of additional security personnel to Eruku and the entire Ekiti Local Government Area of Kwara State, in response to a request by the state government.
Tinubu also directed the police and other security agencies to track down the gunmen responsible for the attack on the church and to intensify efforts to rescue the abducted schoolgirls in Kebbi.
According to Onanuga, the President was originally scheduled to depart Abuja on Wednesday to attend the 20th G20 Leaders Summit in Johannesburg and subsequently proceed to Luanda for the 7th AU-EU Summit.
However, he suspended the trips to focus on the escalating security concerns.
The presidential aide added that the President will await a detailed report from Vice President Kashim Shettima, who visited Kebbi State on his behalf, as well as security assessments from the police and the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding the Kwara attack.
“Disturbed by the security breaches in Kebbi State and Monday’s attack on worshippers in Eruku, President Tinubu decided to suspend his departure. He now awaits reports from the Vice President and the security agencies,”Onanuga said
The President reaffirmed his directive to security operatives to ensure the safe return of the abducted schoolgirls and to pursue the perpetrators until they are apprehended.
