Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has appealed to former United States President Donald Trump to provide diplomatic and strategic support to Nigeria in tackling its persistent security challenges, rather than threatening punitive measures.
In a statement issued on Sunday in Osogbo,against the backdrop of Trump’s recent remarks suggesting possible U.S. security and diplomatic actions against Nigeria, Governor Adeleke called for constructive engagement within the framework of the long-standing Nigeria-U.S. partnership.
“I appeal to the Presidency of the United States of America to support Nigeria in fully implementing the recently developed national security strategy.
“The new strategy is comprehensive and capable of addressing the monster of banditry and terrorist killings in many parts of the country,”Adeleke said.
The governor commiserated with families of victims of Boko Haram, banditry, and other forms of criminality across northern Nigeria, describing Trump’s comments as “a wake-up call” for the Nigerian government to intensify the implementation of new security measures through collaboration with international allies.
“We need help from the United States and other partners to overcome the terrorism challenge. “Nigeria continues to suffer devastating attacks in parts of the North, claiming countless innocent lives,’ he said
The governor expressed optimism that a high-level engagement between President Donald Trump and President Ahmed Bola Tinubu presidents will enable the American government to better appreciate the progress, obstacles, and realities of the ongoing security operations in Nigeria.
Adeleke emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges require partnership, not confrontation, urging the U.S. and other global allies to strengthen their support for Nigerian security agencies and political leadership.
“Peaceful dialogue between Abuja and Washington is the key, not military intervention,” he stressed.
The Osun governor also called on the Nigerian political class to rally behind the Federal Government in managing the diplomatic tensions, commending the Presidency for its proactive steps towards calming the situation and addressing legitimate concerns of Nigeria’s western partners, particularly the United States.
“This is the time to unite as a nation and support the national leadership in tackling internal and external threats for the protection of our citizens,” Adeleke added. “We need peace, not war, to deepen our democracy and secure our nation,” he said.
