In a renewed effort to reduce road accidents, especially during the Ember Months, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Niger State Sector Command, has launched an extensive public awareness and sensitization campaign aimed at promoting safer driving habits among motorists.
Speaking at a press briefing at the IBB Pen House, Minna, the Sector Commander, FRSC RS7.2, Aishat Sa’ad, said the deployment of personnel and Special Marshals across major highways and accident-prone areas formed part of the 2025 Ember Months enlightenment campaign.
She said this year’s theme, “Take Responsibility for Your Safety, Stop Distracted Driving,” underscores the significant role of human behavior in road crashes, noting that the majority of accidents are caused by drivers’ negligence and recklessness.
“Driver’s behavior is one of the fundamental elements in determining safety on our highways.Every motorist must take responsibility for their actions behind the wheel,”Sa’ad emphasized.
To ensure the success of the campaign, she explained that the Command has intensified patrols, deployed additional personnel on major routes, and organized safety rallies in motor parks across the state to educate drivers and passengers on precautionary measures while traveling, especially on highways.
Sa’ad , however ,warned against night journeys, stressing that traveling at odd hours exposes drivers and passengers to higher risks and delays in emergency response during crashes.
“We have severally discouraged travelers from embarking on night journeys due to the dangers involved and the low chances of timely rescue at night,” she further cautioned.
The sector commander appealed for greater collaboration from the media in spreading safety messages, noting that similar campaigns in previous years contributed to a notable reduction in the number of road crashes.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Niger State Council, Comrade Abu Nmodu, commended the FRSC for its proactive steps towards achieving an accident-free society and assured the Command of the media’s continued support in promoting road safety awareness.
