Almost ten years after the passing of Prince Abubakar Audu, Kogi State’s first democratically elected governor, the state government has begun moves to honour the late political icon, whose leadership and vision continue to shape Kogi’s history and development.
Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, represented by the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello,On Friday,inaugurated a 13-member committee to plan a 10th-year memorial programme in honour of the late statesman.
The committee is chaired by the Deputy Governor, Comrade Joel Salifu, with the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Barr. Ozigi Mamodu Deedat, serving as secretary.
Its membership also includes politicians, technocrats, family representatives, and academics ,a reflection of the broad influence Audu wielded across political, social, and developmental spheres in Kogi State.
Speaking at the inauguration, Ododo said the memorial was not merely a remembrance event but a recognition of the pivotal role Prince Audu played in laying the foundation for modern Kogi.
“This great leader devoted his life to the service of our state and beyond. Nearly ten years later, his disciples and indeed the state have resolved to honour him with this anniversary,” he said.
For many Kogites, Prince Audu remains more than a former governor, he was a symbol of ambition, courage, and transformational leadership. His legacy of infrastructural development, political vision, and public service continues to inspire discussions across the state.
Accepting the assignment, the Deputy Governor assured that the committee would organize a befitting and memorable event.
“We will work with all stakeholders to ensure a smooth and successful memorial. The event will be a tribute worthy of the late Prince,” he pledged.
Fondly known as the Lion of Kogi politics, Prince Abubakar Audu died in November 2015 while leading in the state’s governorship election. His death altered the trajectory of Kogi’s political landscape and left an enduring mark on Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The forthcoming memorial is expected to reignite reflections on his legacy and the enduring values he championed in leadership and governance in Kogi state.
