Fresh leadership, fresh vision, and a bold mission, that was the tone set as Aliyu Abubakar-Idris, newly elected President of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) Staff Multipurpose Cooperative Society, pledged to unlock new investment opportunities and spearhead a staff housing programme in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Speaking at the inauguration of the cooperative’s new executives on Tuesday in Abuja, Abubakar-Idris assured members that his team would focus on developing the society’s lands across the FCT and its environs to deliver affordable housing for staff.
He added that the new leadership would also strengthen the cooperative’s financial base by channeling its resources into viable and sustainable business ventures.
In his farewell remarks, outgoing President, Mr. Stephen Igiewe, urged the new executives to be firm, transparent, and always put the collective interests of members first in all decisions.
Our correspondent reports that the election of the new leadership, which came at the end of the cooperative’s 13th Annual General Meeting (AGM), was keenly contested, producing both clear wins and narrow margins.
Abubakar-Idris emerged unopposed as President, alongside Wunmi Agboola as Treasurer and Abdulrasheed Adebayo as Welfare Officer. Segun Lawal secured the Vice-President seat with 92 votes, edging Joseph Edeh who polled 90 votes.
Similarly, John Ojamiren won the Secretary position with 116 votes against Dr.Uche Anunne’s 64, while Momoh clinched the Financial Secretary slot ahead of Ngozi Amah. For the position of Public Relations Officer, Dennis Pollyn polled 57 votes to defeat Chidi Opara (55 votes) and Ese Eniola-Williams (20 votes).
