The Kwara State House of Assembly has called for urgent regulatory action and intensified public sensitization against the rising sale and use of harmful cosmetics, organic creams, and other unapproved body products in the state.
The Speaker of the Assembly, Engr. Yakubu Danladi, raised the alarm during plenary, warning that unregulated products pose grave health risks, if unchecked.
“We cannot ignore the dangers of these unregulated cosmetics. Agencies like NAFDAC and SON must be fully involved in monitoring, information sharing, and enforcement to safeguard citizens’ wellbeing,” he said.
The motion, sponsored by Hajia Yusuf Maryam Aladi, representing Ilorin South, highlighted growing health complications linked to these products.
She noted that many contain dangerous chemicals such as mercury and steroids, which have been associated with infertility, organ damage, and cancer.
“These items are openly sold in markets, beauty shops, and online without NAFDAC approval. It is alarming that enforcement remains weak,” she stressed.
Supporting the motion, Hon. Abdulraheem Medinat Motunrayo (Lanwa/Ejidongari Constituency) described the trend as “a looming public health crisis,” accusing social media influencers of fueling the problem by endorsing products without disclosing their risks.
Also speaking, Hon. Sheun Ogunniyi (Ojomu/Balogun Constituency) warned that continued use of harmful cosmetics could eventually put additional pressure on the state’s healthcare system.
The House Leader, Barr. Mogaji Oba, commended Aladi for raising the motion, after which members unanimously adopted it, signaling the Assembly’s strong commitment to protecting the health of Kwara residents.
