GSS Afon Alumni Plan for 50th Anniversary Of Alma Mater

The Old Students’ Association of Government Secondary School, Afon (GSS Afon), Kwara State, has announced plans for the school’s 50th anniversary, promising a series of impactful activities to mark the milestone.

Founded on September 3, 1976, during the administration of Maj’-Gen. George Agbazika Innih, GSS Afon has over the past five decades produced graduates who have distinguished themselves in various fields of endeavor.

To ensure a memorable celebration, the association has inaugurated a Central Planning Committee (CPC) with subcommittees on Finance, Protocol, Publicity, Entertainment, Welfare, and Transition/Election.

In a statement made available to The Reporters, the alumni described the planned anniversary as more than just a commemoration.

According to them, it is an opportunity to celebrate the school’s legacy, honor pioneer teachers and past leaders, reconnect with fellow alumni, and chart new pathways for the institution’s growth and development.

They added that the celebration will serve as a platform for leadership transition within the association, thereby reinforcing its sustainability.

Other objectives of the anniversary include:

Showcasing 50 years of academic, social, and moral contributions of GSS Afon.

Uniting all alumni for fellowship, networking, and collaboration.

Recognizing pioneer teachers, distinguished alumni, and past leaders.

Launching new development projects such as a modern library, ICT center, scholarship schemes, and infrastructure upgrades.

Conducting a transparent and peaceful election of a new Executive Council.

The four-day programme is scheduled as follows:

Day One: Reunion & Cultural Night will involve Cocktail dinner, cultural displays, talent showcases, and recognition of pioneer teachers.

Day Two: Anniversary Celebration will feature Anniversary lecture, project launch, awards, and entertainment.

Day Three: Community & Legacy Impact will be devoted to commissioning of projects, free medical outreach, career talks, alumni football match, and gala night.

Day Four will be for Thanksgiving & Transition Ceremony Interdenominational service, presentation of reports, election of new executives, and a farewell lunch.

On funding and sponsorship, the association disclosed that the celebration will be financed through contributions from alumni sets, donations from prominent members, corporate sponsorships, sales of branded souvenirs, a fundraising dinner, and a raffle draw.

Meanwhile, at a meeting convened by the executive council alongside some members of the association in Ilorin, it was resolved that the Central Planning Committee should accommodate the following:

LOGISTICS AND WELFARE COMMITTEE is composite of
1Souvenir & Branding
1Finance & Fundraising
1Programme & Event
3Prayer & Spiritual.

PROJECT AND LEGACY COMMITTEE will involve

3Mobilization & Membership.
