Panic turned into relief in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State after security operatives stormed Babasango hideouts, freeing several kidnapped victims and forcing the abductors to flee.
Community leaders in Babanla confirmed that many captives escaped during the raid, which saw armed confrontations between security forces and the kidnappers.
“The operation has been a modest success. Not only were several criminals neutralized, but dozens of victims also regained their freedom. Many are now safe in Babanla and Shagbe,” a local source said on Tuesday on the condition of anonymity.
Another resident recounted how a forest guard earlier feared dead resurfaced alive after the intense operation, which lasted from Sunday night until early Monday morning.
A government official, while confirming the development, explained that the breakthrough came as the kidnappers abandoned their captives when overwhelmed by security forces.
“Many of the abductors died in the encounter with security forces, while others fled. The Sunday night operation demonstrates progress in government’s determination to rid the state of these criminals,” the source said.
Community leaders in Babanla and surrounding areas reported sightings freed victims making their way home.
Authorities have assured residents that more coordinated operations are underway until, in their words, “the cowards are completely flushed out of the state.”
