In a strategic move reflecting the undercurrents within Nigeria’s main opposition party, the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has announced the reinstatement of Senator Samuel Anyanwu as the party’s National Secretary.
The announcement was made on Wednesday in Abuja by the party’s Acting National Chairman, Ambassador Umar Damagum, who addressed journalists at the PDP national headquarters.
Anyanwu’s return comes on the heels of mounting internal disagreements over the party’s planned 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, which had been slated for June 30. The party’s notice for the meeting was reportedly rejected, sparking speculation of deeper procedural and political rifts within the PDP’s top ranks.
In a surprising twist, Damagum declared that the NEC meeting would no longer hold, citing procedural irregularities. He, however, revealed that the party would instead convene a National Caucus meeting on the same date.
Political observers see Anyanwu’s reinstatement and the NEC meeting’s cancellation as significant indicators of shifting alliances and strategic recalibrations within the PDP as it positions itself for future national relevance.
