A 300-level student of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai, was stabbed to death in the early hours of Monday during a violent robbery attack on a student lodge located opposite the institution’s main campus.
Our correspondent reports that the tragic incident, which claimed the life of Jafar, a student in the Faculty of Education, is the third such attack in the university community in less than two weeks.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants, believed to be armed robbers, stormed the Ndakitabu lodge at about 2:30 a.m., targeting off-campus students.
According to sources, Jafar had arrived late on Sunday and unknowingly walked into the attackers during their operation.
He was repeatedly stabbed in the neck and despite efforts to save him, he was pronounced dead at the General Hospital, Lapai. Jafar was reportedly the only male child of his parents.
The incident has sparked outrage among students, who accused security agencies of failing to protect the university environment.
In protest, hundreds of students took to the streets on Monday, barricading the Agaie-Lapai road and demanding urgent intervention from the state government and improved security measures around the campus.
Reacting to the development, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Police Command in Niger State, SP Wasiu Abiodun, confirmed the attack and the subsequent student protest, stating that tactical police teams have been deployed to Lapai to restore order.
Abiodun assured that investigations are underway, as directed by Commissioner of Police, to identify and apprehend the perpetrators of the attack.
Our correspondent gathered that the latest of such tragic incident has deepened concerns over the safety of students, particularly those living off-campus, with many calling for sustained police presence and improved surveillance to prevent further tragedies.
