Kwara State’s football scene has received a major boost with the official launch of the Aiedu Football Academy (AFA) in Lafiagi, Edu Local Government Area of the state,aimed at shaping the next generation of football talent and driving grassroots development.
Founded by U.S.-based entrepreneur Aliyu Isa-Aiedu, the academy seeks to provide a platform for young aspiring footballers, offering them the tools to pursue professional careers while steering them away from negative influences.
At the launch event held at the Lafiagi Township Stadium, on Friday, Aiedu stressed the importance of sports in youth empowerment.
“Football is more than a game—it’s a pathway to opportunities. “Many young talents have dreams but lack the resources to realize them. This academy will change that narrative,”Aiedu said.
Reflecting on his own experience, Aiedu shared how his football aspirations were thwarted in Nigeria due to limited opportunities.
He expressed deep commitment to nurturing local talent, with a view to giving back to his community by ensuring that the youth of Kwara do not face the same hurdles he experienced.
“As a young footballer, I had big dreams but no support system. This academy is my way of ensuring that future stars in Kwara won’t face the same obstacles,” Aiedu added.
Dr. Ndanuza Manzuma, Director of Football at AFA, expressed delight about the academy’s potential to produce future Nigerian football stars.
According to him, AFA focuses on top-tier training and international exposure.
“This is just the beginning. With the backing of the Kwara State Football Association and other key partners, we are confident that AFA will leave a lasting impact on Nigerian football,”Manzuma said
Our correspondent reports that the launch event culminated in an exhibition match where AFA’s young talents impressed with a commanding 2-0 victory over Ilorin-based Dolly P Academy FC. Goals from Mohammed Babawo and Mubarak Musiliu served as a promising sign of the academy’s future success in developing the next wave of football stars.
