Known for their unflinching commitment to informing, educating, and entertaining the people of Kogi State, the journalists took a collective step back from their hectic routines. For once, the weighty task of covering political, social, and economic events took a backseat, allowing the journalists to embrace the timeless wisdom: “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.”
This highly anticipated event, which took place at the NUJ Press Centre at the heart of Lokoja, saw the NUJ members revel in light-hearted moments, sharing laughter and exchanging pleasantries.
To many journalists who graced the occasion,the gathering served as a reminder that even the hardest-working individuals deserve a chance to recharge and unwind. The note that it was a perfect blend of relaxation and professional bonding, ensuring that they return to their critical work with renewed energy and passion.
The laid-back affair, organized by the Seidu Adamu Haruna-led administration, was graced by notable figures from various strata of the society, from seasoned journalists to members of other prominent sectors. The atmosphere was filled with warmth and nostalgia as Journalists and guests reflected on the value of balancing hard work with moments of joy.
The day’s events began with a heartfelt prayer session, honoring both Muslim and Christian traditions, followed by a speech from Alhaji Adeiza Momojimoh, the Vice President of Zone D, He lauded the NUJ leadership for organizing such a significant event and emphasized the importance of creating moments of relaxation for journalists.
Among the distinguished attendees were former Vice President of Zone D, Mr. Tims Ajiga, Director General of Radio Kogi, Princess Nana Hawa Yussuff, the Managing Director of the state-owned Graphic newspaper, M J Itopa and Professor Salisu Ogbo Usman, who was represented by Mrs. Uredo Omale, Director of Public Relations at Kogi State Polytechnic. The newly appointed Commissioner of Police for the Police Command in the state,CP. Miller Dantawaye was also represented by his Deputy, Baba Alhaji.
All speakers commended the NUJ for hosting the event, praising the union’s commitment to the well-being of its members.
Engr. Mohammed Danladi Faruk, the Commissioner for Water Resources, took the stage to reassure the people of Lokoja that the state government is actively addressing water challenges in the region.
He promised that efforts are being made to ensure that potable water reaches areas like the Army barracks,and beyond, latest by Sunday,emphasizing the government’s dedication to resolving the ongoing water issues.
As the event unfolded, the ambiance was further lifted by classic tunes like One Love by Bob Marley, Felix Liberty and Whiz Kid which had everyone—journalists and guests alike—feeling the rhythm. The Chairman, Vice President of Zone D, and several other prominent figures couldn’t resist the beat, as they took to the dance floor while others swayed to the music, sitting and enjoying the collective spirit of the day.
The gathering was a delightful blend of relaxation, inspiration, and fun, reminding everyone present that while the work of a journalist is demanding, there’s always room to pause, enjoy, and reconnect with each other. This was, indeed, a celebration of the individuals who tirelessly shape the news and keep the world informed—proving once again that even the hardest workers deserve their moments of leisure.
The get-together hosted by the NUJ was a true triumph! With sizzling suya, refreshing soft drinks, and chilled bottled water on offer, it was the perfect setting for members,some of whom hadn’t seen each other in months or years to rub minds and reconnect.
The general consensus is that this event was a long-awaited success, arriving right on time and achieving exactly what it set out to do!
