The National President of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), Alhassan Yahya, along with the Deputy National President, Dr. Bimbo Oyetunde, made an impromptu visit to the office of Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, over the weekend.
Our correspondent gathered that the significant move was aimed towards fostering stronger collaborations in security reporting.
The meeting, aimed at strengthening ties between the media and national security sectors, focused on advancing intelligence-sharing, enhancing coverage, and consolidating efforts to secure Nigeria’s territorial integrity.
The NUJ President emphasized the importance of unity and collaboration, saying, “Coming together is the beginning of keeping the country more together.”
He underscored the pivotal role that both the media and national security agencies must play in fostering peace, stability, and the effective communication of national security matters to the public.
During the discussions, both parties agreed that a closer working relationship between the media and security agencies is essential in the face of the evolving security challenges Nigeria faces.
The meeting also highlighted the role of responsible and ethical journalism in ensuring that security information is properly conveyed without compromising national safety or inciting fear.
Many journalists viewed the as a partnership that comes at a time when there is an urgent need for more informed and effective reporting on security matters, particularly in the context of counterterrorism and the safeguarding of Nigeria’s borders.
With this alliance, the NUJ and the National Security Adviser’s office said they are poised to embark on a journey of cooperation aimed at reinforcing Nigeria’s security framework through informed, accurate, and timely reporting.
Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to continued dialogue and collaboration, recognizing that the security of the nation is a shared responsibility that requires joint efforts from all sectors.
