A lecturer from the Department of Crop and Environmental Protection at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomosho, Oyo State,South West,Dr. Adrola Odewole has urged Nigerian farmers to adopt plant-based pest control methods as an environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative to chemical insecticides.
In an interview with journalists in Ilorin on Tuesday, Dr. Odewole highlighted the benefits of plant extracts, which are biodegradable, free from harmful residues, and capable of protecting crops without damaging ecosystems.
According to her, plant-derived solutions such as ginger, sunflower, fish bean, African black pepper, cloves, and citrus offer smallholder farmers affordable and accessible alternatives to synthetic chemicals.
Dr. Odewole expressed deep concern about the widespread misuse of chemical insecticides, particularly on vegetables like cucumber, okra, cabbage, and amaranths.
The don cited a study on cucumber samples in Ogbomoso markets, revealing pesticide residues exceeding European Union Maximum Residue Limits (EU MRLs), which pose serious health risks to consumers and farmers alike.
“This misuse not only contaminates food but also pollutes the environment, threatens pollinators essential for agriculture, and leads to the emergence of pesticide-resistant pests,” she explained.
Health risks linked to such residues include skin disorders, respiratory problems, and long-term illnesses,she warned.
Dr. Odewole urged policymakers to tighten regulations on chemical pesticide use and promote sustainable pest control measures and appealed for increased farmer education and support from agricultural extension officers and organizations.
“Empowering farmers with knowledge and access to innovative pest management tools is essential for transforming agriculture and ensuring long-term sustainability,” she said.
The university lecturer assured that adopting plant-based pest control methods would safeguard human health, protect the environment, and strengthen food security in Nigeria.
She encouraged continued research and collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and farmers to revolutionize pest management practices for a more sustainable agricultural future.
