The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University, in honor of the former Head of State and elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, made this announcement on Monday while addressing State House correspondents after the council’s final meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

Idris said: “The Federal Executive Council has decided to rename the University of Abuja to recognize and honor General Yakubu Gowon. Henceforth, the institution will be known as Yakubu Gowon University.

“However, the process requires legislative approval, and FEC has resolved to forward this decision to the National Assembly for the necessary legal amendments.”

Indris revealed that the council would take a recess from December 18, 2024, to January 6, 2025.
