An NGO, the Yusuf John-Suberu Foundation, has urged Nigerians to engage in collective and sustained efforts to combat corruption as the world observes International Anti-Corruption Day.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Yusuf Suberu, emphasized the need for unity among stakeholders to address the pervasive effects of corruption in Nigeria.
Our correspondent reports that the International Anti-Corruption Day, commemorated annually on December 9, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2003 to raise awareness about the adverse impacts of corruption on societies and economies. The theme for this year’s observance is “United Against Corruption for a Brighter Future.”
Dr. Suberu noted that corruption remains a significant impediment to development and good governance in Nigeria, undermining public trust in institutions, distorting markets, and depriving citizens of essential services.
“Corruption is a complex and multi-faceted problem that affects us all and requires the collaboration of government, civil society, and the private sector to tackle,” he stated.
He said that the Foundation has been at the forefront of promoting transparency and accountability in governance.
According to Dr. Suberu, the foundation has partnered with government agencies, civil society organizations (CSOs), and community groups to strengthen institutions and advance anti-corruption initiatives.
He called on Nigerians to actively participate in the fight against corruption by holding leaders accountable, demanding transparency, and reporting corrupt practices to relevant authorities.
“We must all work together to create a culture of accountability in our country. Leaders must be held responsible for the proper utilization of public resources for the public good,” he added.
Dr. Suberu commended the Federal Government’s anti-corruption efforts through agencies like the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).
He urged citizens to support these efforts to build a transparent and prosperous Nigeria.
