The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has launched a tariff simplification initiative aimed at reducing the complexity of tariff options and promotional offers that often confuse consumers, according to Katrina Times.
Speaking at a capacity-building workshop for journalists at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) in Oshodi, Lagos, on Thursday, the Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau, Ikechukwu Adinde, noted the challenges posed by the current structure.
“The existing tariff framework, with its multiple promotions and add-ons, creates uncertainty for consumers,” . “Our goal is to simplify the process, making it easier for consumers to choose plans that suit their needs,”Adinde said.
He revealed that a data analysis of major telecom networks uncovered an overwhelming variety of plans.
“For instance, one operator offers 14 voice plans and 145 data plans, while another has 27 voice plans and 41 data plans. “This level of complexity hampers consumer satisfaction,” he explained.
To address this, Adinde disclosed that the NCC would streamline tariff options, limiting operators to a maximum of seven plans each to promote clarity and ease of choice.
On the issue of data depletion, he noted the connection between data tariff plans and consumption patterns.
“Consumers must understand how their data is used. We have launched awareness campaigns to educate users on managing data usage, particularly on smartphones,” he said.
According to him, NCC is also improving transparency by publishing approved tariff plans on its website and promoting consumer education on data management.
Adinde urged users to monitor data consumption, identify high-usage apps, and adjust phone settings to optimise data usage.
“Our efforts aim to enhance consumer experience, promote transparency, and simplify the telecommunications market,” Adinde said.
