The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has strongly condemned the recent assault on its patrol team during a routine operation near Shao Junction in Olooru Local Government Area, Kwara State.
In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr. Olusegun Ogungbemide, warned that the FRSC would not tolerate any further attacks on its personnel.
Our correspondent gathered that the incident occurred on Sunday and involved a motorcyclist whose vehicle had been impounded for riding without a helmet.
Ogungbemide expressed grave concern over the actions of the motorcyclist, who resisted arrest by stripping and climbing onto the bonnet of the FRSC patrol vehicle, thereby inciting the public against the officers.
“The offender, in resisting arrest, caused a scene that drew public attention. This led to some individuals forcibly removing the impounded motorcycle from the patrol vehicle and physically attacking the FRSC officers,” Ogungbemide stated.
He added that the assailants also threatened to destroy the patrol vehicle.
The situation could have escalated into chaos, but quick police intervention resulted in the arrest of one of the attackers but the offender escaped with the motorcycle.
Ogungbemide issued a strong warning against violence directed at FRSC patrol teams, emphasizing that the corps is committed to ensuring justice is served in this case to prevent similar incidents in the future.
“While our patrol teams are trained to act with civility, the FRSC will not tolerate situations where traffic offenders, in collaboration with the public, subject our personnel to ridicule or violence,” he warned.
He also recalled the FRSC Corps Marshal, Mallam Shehu Mohammed, advising the public to seek legitimate means of redress rather than resorting to violence.
The spokesman called on the public to cooperate with the FRSC, stressing that road safety is a shared responsibility that demands adherence to traffic laws.
