The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has extended condolences to the families of the victims, residents, and the Government of Jigawa State following a tragic tanker explosion.
FRSC Corps Marshal, Malam Shehu Mohammed, shared his sympathies in a statement from the Corps Public Education Officer’s office on Wednesday in Abuja. Expressing solidarity, he offered thoughts and prayers for the affected families and people of Jigawa State.
The Reporters gathered that the devastating incident occurred in Majia, Jigawa State, where 94 people initially lost their lives while attempting to collect fuel from a fallen tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS). Later reports confirmed that the death toll rose to 147.
The FRSC described the incident as a stark reminder of the critical need to adhere to safety regulations.
Marshal Mohammed urged road users to exercise caution and await FRSC emergency personnel in such situations.
He emphasized that the public should stay away from fuel spillages, as the contents are highly flammable and could lead to severe injuries or fatalities.
Sources said the crash occurred when a DAF tanker, loaded with PMS, attempted to avoid a speed bump at high speed, resulting in the tanker detaching from the vehicle.
The fire reportedly ignited when locals gathered to collect the fuel shortly after the crash.
In response, the FRSC ordered an investigation into the accident and mandated Commanding Officers to enforce minimum safety standards for all fuel tankers before transport.

Authorities confirmed that the injured have been taken to nearby hospitals, while a mass burial has been held for the deceased.
